2008-2009<\/U><\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/P>\n

Before the half term, the whole school took part in an ARTS week. 3 brilliant artists came into school and worked with us to produce mosaics, stone carvings and a huge ceramic piece! Every child in the school created something and our pieces are now on display in and around our school. Thankyou to the artists for making our week so fantastic!<\/FONT><\/P>\n

<\/P>\n

We took part in an exciting Science Fun Day, where some members from NYBEP came to work with us on different activities. KS1 children had fun making volcanoes, moving monsters and balloon cars, whilst KS2 made a giant tetrahedron, slime and rockets.<\/FONT><\/P>\n

For comic relief we all dressed up in a topsy turvey style to raise money. Some children came in pyjamas, others came with their clothes back to front or inside out! <\/FONT><\/P>\n

On Wednesday 15th Ocotber we all took part in a curriculum fun day all based around P.E. It was fun! The younger children did multiskills in the morning and the older children acted as sports leaders. Wrens played football games and gym.<\/FONT><\/P>\n

In the afternoon, the older children got a chance to take part in the multiskills, hile the younger children used the gym apparatus and played playground games!<\/FONT><\/P>\n

<\/FONT> <\/P>\n

This month is \'Walk to School\' month.
We had an assembly, where we the children acted out a poem and gave lots of good reasons for walking to school. If you can, try to walk to school where possible!<\/FONT><\/P>\n

Multi-Skills Festival<\/U><\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/P>\n

Our Year 2 children took part in a sports festival at Sherburn High school on Wednesday 2^{nd<\/SUP> July. The event was attended by other KS1 pupils from our Sports Partnership cluster. The children had a fun time demonstrating all their sporting skills such as, jumping, throwing, running, balancing and cheering each other along. They came back to school exhausted!<\/FONT><\/P>\n}

Sports day<\/U><\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/P>\n

On Tuesday 24^{th<\/SUP> June the children from Class A to E took part in our annual sports day. We had 10 teams with names, banners and chants on a ‘Healthy Eating’ theme. The children were involved in a carousel of events, finished by team relays. Then our parents and staff rounded off the morning with a potato and spoon race.<\/FONT><\/P>\n}

The overall winning team were the The Racing Runner Beans - Green, in second place were The Brown Potatoes - Browns and in third place were The Crazy Carrots – Red. The winning banner was The Picnic Pinks, the winning chant was the Yummy Yellows and the winning team for attitude and behaviour were The Brown Potatoes.<\/FONT><\/P>\n

Our parents and other family members then joined us for a picnic lunch. A great morning was had by all. <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/P>\n

Skateboarding Adventures <\/STRONG><\/U><\/FONT><\/P>\n

On Thursday 22^{nd<\/SUP> May our Year 6 pupils went on a trip to Fairburn Skatepark, funded by our Sports Partnership. A well earned treat after SAT’s. A few bumps and bruises were gained but we had a great time and new skills were learned.<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/P>\n}

Garden Project<\/STRONG><\/U><\/FONT><\/P>\n

On Wednesday 16^{th<\/SUP> April a team of six volunteers from Yorkshire Water arrived at Kellington Primary School ready and willing to start work on the garden project. Norma Bray and Kath Newton have been working hard behind the scenes over the last few weeks planning the project and buying plants, arbours and even bullock manure. <\/FONT><\/P>\n}

<\/FONT><\/o:p><\/P>\n

Over two days the team worked very hard to prepare the garden area. <\/FONT><\/P>\n

<\/FONT><\/o:p><\/P>\n

First the flags were lifted and moved out of the way – a very tiring task. Then the “muddy mound” disappeared – that took a long time! Next the pond was filled in – about time, I hear you say. <\/SPAN>After that a screen went up – the posts had to be concreted into the ground. <\/SPAN>Meanwhile two arbours were constructed – more difficult than it looks, especially when someone walks off with the instructions. Then five raised beds were created – one for each of our senses. <\/FONT><\/P>\n

<\/FONT><\/o:p><\/P>\n

By the second day the Global Garden started to take shape. It now includes a North American Prairie, a”jungle” area and a tranquil Japanese Garden. The gardening club worked hard at the end of the two days to put in the new plants. <\/FONT><\/P>\n

<\/FONT><\/o:p><\/P>\n

The raised beds in the sensory garden caused some problems but at last they were complete and the gardening club were able to sort a variety of plants into each of the five beds. They will need lots of tender care to help them grow well. <\/FONT><\/P>\n

<\/FONT><\/o:p><\/P>\n

There is still a lot of work to be done to complete the sensory garden but now, thanks to a wonderful team of volunteers, it is well on its way. <\/FONT><\/P>\n

<\/FONT><\/o:p><\/P>\n

Y5 ENTERPRISE PROJECT<\/STRONG><\/U><\/FONT><\/P>\n

For the past 5 weeks, the Y5 children have been taking part in an Enterprise project. They learnt lots about marketing, costing, products and packaging design. During the last week of their project, they sold all their produce to the rest of the school!<\/FONT><\/P>\n

<\/STRONG><\/U><\/FONT> <\/P>\n

BOOK WEEK<\/STRONG><\/U><\/FONT><\/P>\n

During Book Week, a lady came to tell each class stories, we dressed up as different book characters for a day and some children attended a workshop where they acted out a play and made masks.<\/FONT><\/P>\n

DANCE FESTIVAL<\/STRONG><\/U><\/FONT><\/P>\n

Some of the Year 5 and 6 children went to Sherburn High School to take part in a dance festival with other primary schools. We were able to share the skills and dances we had been learning during P.E.<\/FONT><\/P>\n

Our dance was a line dance, called \'Watermelon Crawl.\' We dressed up in costume as cowboys and had a fantastic time!<\/FONT><\/P>\n

<\/FONT> <\/P>\n

MATHS WORKSHOP<\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/U><\/FONT><\/P>\n

One afternoon and evening, Mrs Mason from the authority came to demonstrate to our parents how we learn maths and what strategies we use. We ran two workshops - one in the afternoon and one in the evening.<\/FONT><\/P>\n

Some of the Year 5 and 6 children used equipment to show how we used the strategies to help our mental maths. We had a great time and the parents enjoyed it too!<\/FONT><\/P>\n

STARDOME<\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/U><\/FONT><\/P>\n

To fit in with our Earth and Space science topic, we had an inflatable dome delivered to the school. Special lights inside the dome projected the stars and constellations onto the dome, so that we could see their positions in the sky.<\/FONT><\/P>\n

Each class was able to go into the dome and Mr Guile explained the different stars and their positions to us. <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/P>\n

In the evening, parents were invited to come and have a look at the Stardome for themselves. We had three rotating activities taking place. One group looked at the Stardome, another used our computers to look at different websites and another spent time doing puzzles and having refreshments.<\/FONT><\/P>\n

It was an enjoyable and fun time!<\/FONT><\/P>\n

Animals in Tuition<\/FONT><\/U><\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/P>\n

Over a number of weeks, some people came in and gave a workshop to children and their parents after school, all about animals. We were able to hold different animals (including a tarantula!) and learn about their special features. There was also a range of different activities for everyone to enjoy, such as designing an animal\'s habitat and making a keyring.<\/FONT><\/P>\n
